Dr. Roy Vera-Velez presenting at the event.
Dr. Roy Vera Velez, Prescribed Fire Science Coordinator and Grassland Ecologist of The Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange (CPPFE) recently participated in the North Dakota Chapter of the Society for Range Management Annual Meeting in Bismarck, North Dakota, joining approximately 150 participants from across Canada and several U.S. states to explore the future of rangeland management.
The event brought together ranchers, land managers, researchers, conservation professionals, and practitioners to share knowledge and discuss the role of prescribed fire, grazing, and other management approaches in sustaining healthy, resilient grasslands. CPPFE showcased its work through a conference presentation and an interactive booth highlighting research, monitoring programs, training opportunities, and collaborative partnerships across the Canadian Prairies and Great Plains. One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to connect with longstanding partners and build new relationships committed to grassland conservation. Among those in attendance was Ken Morrice from the Association of Manitoba Community Pastures (AMCP), a valued CPPFE partner.
Events like these are more than opportunities to share information. They help strengthen cross-border networks, foster collaboration, and advance practical solutions for the stewardship of North America's grasslands. As interest in prescribed fire and sustainable rangeland management continues to grow, partnerships and knowledge exchange remain essential to supporting thriving landscapes and communities on both sides of the border.
