2026 Oskana Plains TREX

Join us for the first-ever 2026 Oskana Plains (Regina-area) Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX), taking place April 20–24, 2026.

This hands-on prescribed fire training brings together land managers, fire practitioners, students, Indigenous partners, researchers, and community members to build skills in applying prescribed fire within grassland and aspen parkland ecosystems. No prior prescribed fire experience is required.

Hosted by Saskatchewan Parks and the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange, the training will operate using the Incident Command System (ICS). Participants will serve in trainee roles on active burn teams and gain practical experience in planning, ignition, holding, monitoring, and fireline leadership, alongside instruction in local fire ecology and management. Live fire activities will occur as weather conditions allow.

The name Oskana comes from the Cree word derived from oskana kâ-asastêki, meaning “where the bones are piled.”

Thanks to support from the Weston Family Prairie Grasslands Initiative, there is no registration fee for this training.

Applications close March 10, 2026 (12:00 PM CST).

Participation is limited to 25 attendees, with regional applicants and partner organizations prioritized.
