Fire, Forage and Hoofs with Renny Grilz, PAg (Distinguished)

Join the SIA Saskatoon Branch on November 17, 2026, at 12:00 pm for a virtual presentation on Fire, Forage, and Hooves: Unpacking Pyric-Herbivory in the Prairies with Renny Grilz PAg.

How combining prescribed fire and grazing restores grassland health, boosts biodiversity, and shapes resilient landscapes. This virtual presentation shifts the conversation from broad prairie ecology to a deep dive into one of grasslands’ most powerful management tools: pyric herbivory (the coupling of fire and grazing). Historically, wild herbivores like bison were drawn to the flush of nutrient-rich vegetation that emerges immediately following a wild or Indigenous-led fire.  This interactive dance between disturbance by fire and selective grazing created dynamic, shifting landscape mosaics essential for biodiversity Reintroducing this natural synergy through prescribed fire and controlled livestock grazing offers massive ecological and agricultural benefits today.
