Introducing "Faces of Fire": Meeting the People Behind the Prescribed Fires.
When most people think of fire on the landscape, they think of emergency responses and suppression. But there is another side to fire, one that is carefully planned, scientifically grounded, and executed by a dedicated community of professionals.
Today, we are excited to launch our new blog series, Faces of Fire, where we will introduce you to the diverse individuals who work behind the scenes of safe, controlled fires across the Canadian prairies.
Prescribed fire is not a solo endeavor. It requires a massive network of practitioners, researchers, indigenous land stewards, ranchers, and volunteer crews. Throughout this series, we will profile the people who read the weather, study the fuel loads, and pull the torches. You will hear from:
Fire Bosses & Practitioners: The professionals who design burn plans down to the minute, balancing wind speeds, humidity, and safety margins to restore ecosystems safely.
Landowners & Producers: Ranchers and farmers who use fire as a tool to manage invasive species, regenerate native grasses, and improve forage for livestock.
Indigenous Knowledge Keepers: Cultural practitioners keeping ancient traditions alive, using fire to heal the land in ways that modern science is only beginning to fully quantify.
Our goal with Faces of Fire is to demystify who uses fire and why. By sharing their stories, we hope to highlight the human element of land stewardship and celebrate the passionate community working to make our prairies more resilient.
